It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Boca Grande Area Chamber of Commerce's annual "World's Richest" Tarpon Tournament.
This year's tournament will award close to a half a million dollars in cash and prizes. It is my privilege to oversee a
tournament which represents the tradition and sportsmanship that put Boca Grande in the forefront of world class sports
fishing.
This prestigious tournament is a collaborative effort lead by a hard-working committee, supported by a dedicated board of directors, made possible by a community of volunteers, and backed by more than 100 sponsors. The generous financial support of our sponsors ensures the continuation of our scholarship fund, and this year is led by the following Platinum Sponsors: Caddy Carts, Inc., Gasparilla Properties, Coral Creek Club, Gulfwind Marina at Palm Island, Johnson Engineering, Italiano Insurance and McHugh-Porter Builders. The tournament committee strives to host a fair tournament in which practiced anglers and rookies alike can compete to boat the winning fish, assisted by the expertise of a professional guide and, undoubtedly, a little luck. The committee has made a couple of rule clarifications this year. Please read all the rules carefully and attend the Captain's Rules Party at the Boca Bay Pass Club Tuesday evening. A complete schedule of events is listed on page 9. Once again, downtown Boca Grande will host the Silver King Celebration, the historic Power House will be the backdrop for the Award and Volunteer Appreciation Banquet, and the Spectator Tent at the beach will allow everyone to enjoy a cold drink and a burger close to the excitement. Spectators will again be treated to informative tours and get to be part of the action aboard Grand Tours' pontoon boat. Renowned cartoonist and island resident, Lamar Sparkman, created the 2001 tournament poster that captures the history of fishing in Boca Grande. It has quickly become a collector's item. Posters, tournament hats, T-shirts, and souvenirs are available at all the events and on-line. Much of what you will enjoy over the next few days is ultimately made possible by the tireless effort of Debbi Ricci, the Chamber's office manager and tournament coordinator. I must take this opportunity to congratulate her on a job well done, and I urge you to do the same when you see her over the next few days. Have fun!
